GES Ambassador Tom Oliver
GES are thrilled to introduce and welcome our new Ambassador, professional actor TOM OLIVER, the well-known and much loved character Lou Carpenter from the long-running Australian TV show Neighbours!
Tom has agreed to support GES because of his close association with Greyhounds due to his daughter Simone Oliver adopting the adorable Gertie (pictured with Tom). Tom said, "When my daughter decided to adopt a Greyhound and Gertie came into our lives, I never realised the plight this beautiful breed faced. Gertie wasn't the quickest of Greyhounds and so was scheduled to be put to sleep. To save her, a vet got her into a drug trial program where she was diagnosed with alopecia, or major hair loss, most likely brought on by stress. Eventually Greyhound Safety Net took her in and then Simone was the lucky one who got to adopt her. Since then her health and happiness has improved tremendously and she's the happiest little Greyhound around."
"But I was shocked that Gertie had to wear a muzzle out in public and found it quite upsetting, as Gertie would try her hardest to get it off and this was the sweetest dog that just did not need to wear a muzzle. She later went to GAP to get a 'green collar' so that she wouldn't have to wear the muzzle, but that too was upsetting as poor Gertie didn't know what was going on and had to stay about 4 days in the kennels there, where she didn't cope very well at all. The Greyhound Equality Society is trying to get these muzzle laws changed and I'm all for that, because if a dog needs to wear a muzzle, then I think it's up to the owner to determine that."
"To muzzle the entire breed by law is pretty unfair in my opinion especially when greyhounds are not allowed off leash anyway, so why a muzzle too? Doesn't the fact that they need to be specially assessed suggest that there is a degree of complicity regarding the practice of live baiting, which was recently exposed?"
"Against all odds, the greyhounds I know are just so gentle. Most of these dogs have already been through enough without having to go back to kennels after adoption to get a muzzle exemption. I wish the Greyhound Equality Society well in their endeavour to get these outdated laws changed."
